Emergana, 1.5 mg, 1 tablet, Zentiva

Indications:
Emergana is an emergency contraceptive, which can be used within 72 hours (3 days) after an unprotected sexual contact or after the failure of the contraceptive method used by you.

These are the following cases:
- No contraceptive method was used during intercourse.
- The contraceptive measure has been used incorrectly, for example if a condom has broken, slipped or been used in the wrong way, if the intravaginal pessary or diaphragm has changed position, been damaged, broken or removed prematurely , in case of failure
a coitus interruptus (eg sperm was ejaculated in the vagina or on the external genitalia).

Emergana contains a synthetic hormone-type active substance called levonorgestrel.
It prevents about 84% of possible pregnancies if you take it within the first 72 hours after unprotected sex. It will not prevent pregnancy every time and is much more effective the sooner it is taken after unprotected sex. It is better to take it within 12 hours than to delay until the third day.

It is considered that Emergana acts by:
- preventing your ovaries from releasing an egg;
- preventing sperm fertilization of the already released egg; or
- preventing the attachment of the fertilized egg to the uterine mucosa.

Emergana can only prevent you from getting pregnant if it is taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. It has no effect if you are already pregnant. If you have another unprotected sexual intercourse after taking Emergana (also if this happens during the same menstrual cycle), the tablet will not exert its contraceptive effect and there is a risk of becoming pregnant again.

This pill is for emergency contraception only, it is not indicated for regular contraception because it is less effective than the regular contraceptive pill.

Emergana is not indicated for use before the first menstrual bleeding (menarche).

Contraindications:
Do not take Emergana:
- if you are allergic to levonorgestrel or any of the other components of this medicine.

Precautions:
Before taking Emergana, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding:
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Task:
You should not take this medicine if you are already pregnant. If you become pregnant even after taking this medicine, it is very important to contact your doctor. There is no evidence that Emergana will harm the developing baby in your womb/womb if you use Emergana as prescribed.
However, your doctor may want to check if the pregnancy is ectopic (when the baby is developing somewhere outside the womb). This is especially important if severe abdominal pain occurs after taking Emergana or if you have previously had an ectopic pregnancy, fallopian tube surgery or pelvic inflammatory disease.
Breastfeeding :
Very small amounts of the active substance of this medicine can appear in breast milk. This is not considered harmful to the infant. However if you are concerned you can take the tablet immediately after breast-feeding and then avoid breast-feeding after taking levonorgestrel, then pump with a breast pump for 6 hours after taking Emergana and discard this milk. In this way, you reduce the amount of active substance that your child can take from breast milk.

Driving vehicles and using machines:
Emergana tablet is unlikely to affect your ability to drive or use machines. However, if you feel tired or dizzy, do not drive or use machines.

Administration method:
Take the tablet as soon as possible, preferably within 12 hours and no later than 72 hours (3 days) after having unprotected sex. Do not delay taking the tablet. The sooner you take the pill after unprotected sex, the better
it works better. The pill only helps you not get pregnant if you take it within 72 hours of unprotected sex.

Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
- Take the tablet as soon as possible, preferably within the first 12 hours and no later than 72 hours (3 days) after you had unprotected sexual contact. Emergana can be taken at any time of the menstrual cycle, assuming you are not already pregnant or think you might be pregnant. Do not chew the tablet, but swallow it whole with water. Do not delay taking the tablet. The tablet works best the sooner you take it after unprotected sex.

- If you are using one of the medicines that can prevent the action of Emergana (see the section "Emergana with other medicines" above) or if you have used one of these medicines in the last 4 weeks, it is possible that the action of Emergana will be less effective in your case . Your doctor may prescribe another type of (non-hormonal) emergency contraception, i.e. a Copper Intrauterine Device (Cu IUD).
If this is not an option for you or if you cannot see the doctor immediately, you can take a double dose of Emergana (ie 2 tablets taken at once).

- If you are already using a method of contraception with regular administration, such as the contraceptive pill, you can continue to take the contraceptive at the usual times.

If, after taking Emergana, another unprotected sexual intercourse took place (also if this happens within the same menstrual cycle), the tablet will not exert its contraceptive effect and there is a risk of pregnancy again.

Use in children and adolescents:
Emergana is not indicated for use before the first menstrual bleeding (menarche).

What to do if you are sick (vomiting):
If you feel sick (vomit) in the first three hours after taking the tablet, you must take another tablet immediately.

After taking Emergana:
After taking Emergana, if you want to have sex and are not using birth control pills, you must use condoms or a diaphragm and spermicide until your next period. These are necessary, because Emergana will not work if you have repeated unprotected sex before the next cycle.

It is recommended that you schedule a medical consultation about three weeks after taking Emergana, to make sure that Emergana has worked. If your menstrual cycle is more than 5 days late or is unusually light or unusually heavy, you should see your doctor as soon as possible. If you have become pregnant even after taking this medicine, it is important to contact your doctor.

Your doctor can also advise you on long-term contraceptive methods, which are much more effective in preventing pregnancy.

If you have continued to use hormonal contraception regularly, such as birth control pills, and you do not have bleeding during the break period, contact your doctor to make sure you are not pregnant.

The next menstrual cycle after taking Emergana:
After using Emergana, your cycle is usually normal and will start on the usual day; however, sometimes it will start a few days later or earlier. If your period is more than 5 days late, you have "abnormal" bleeding on that date, or you think you might be pregnant, you should take a pregnancy test to see if you are pregnant.

Composition:
