Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The following reactions may occur with an unknown frequency (the frequency cannot be estimated from the available data):
- Allergic reactions: if you have a rash, swelling of the mouth or face, have difficulty breathing, stop using this medicine and consult your doctor immediately. Very rarely, these effects can be symptoms of a severe allergic reaction.
- Brown coloring of the tongue: this is not dangerous and disappears when the treatment is stopped.
- Brown staining of teeth and dental work: this staining is not permanent and can be easily prevented by brushing and cleaning the teeth periodically.
- False passage (coughing during meals, with the feeling that the food is "going down the wrong way"): this is caused by tetracaine (a mild anesthetic), which could induce suffocation. If this happens, stop the treatment.
