Milk thistle, which is the basis of silymarin production, is a globally cultivated plant from the Mediterranean region whose fruit has been used to support liver health for more than 2,000 years. The plant's name and popular name (Boldogasszony's milk) may be derived from the legend that the white marbling of the leaves and the white milky juice were created when the milk of Mary, the mother of Jesus, sprinkled on the plant. Probably due to this belief, it was also widely used to increase milk production.
