Shea butter is obtained from the nuts of the Shea-Karité tree and originates from the savannahs of West Africa. The shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa) is part of the Sapotaceae family and grows in countries such as: Kamerun, Kongo, Guinea, Nigeria, Sudan, Uganda, etc.
The shea tree bears fruit after 10-15 years of age, and the kernel of the fruit is called a nut. The richest harvest is obtained after the shea tree reaches the age of 20-30 years, when around 15-20 kilograms of fruit are harvested. The fruits are similar in size to plums and ripen between 4 and 6 months. From one kilogram of fruit, around 400 grams of dehydrated fruit are obtained. But not only the stone is used, but also the flesh of the fruit, which is edible, and the leaves and root are used for therapeutic purposes.
Shea butter is considered the "gold of Africa" ​​being used not only for skin care, but also for cooking and lighting, being a burning oil. Shea nuts contain around 60-70% fats, including essential fatty acids, natural antioxidants and vitamins such as: A, E and F, all of which contribute to the regeneration, nourishment and hydration of the skin. Shea butter is obtained as follows: the ripe nuts are crushed or ground, mixed with water and the composition is gently heated on the fire. The oil that rises to the surface is removed and left to cool. A yellowish to white fat with a specific raw smell is obtained from this oil.
In Africa, shea butter is produced in large quantities to protect and nourish the skin exposed to the sun, it is stored in wooden barrels and exported all over the world.
Shea butter is most often used for cosmetic purposes, in its pure state or mixed with other oils, due to its nourishing and moisturizing properties. Use:
Shea butter melts at body temperature. Warm a small amount in the palms, then apply to the skin and massage gently. It can be heated in a bain-marie (steam bath) and thus it is easier to apply.

For hair:
It is applied to the hair and scalp by gentle massage. Leave it on for 15-30 minutes, then wash your hair with shampoo. It can be used as an ingredient in creams, lotions, ointments, face and body masks, in the manufacture of natural soaps.
