Resveratrol is a polyphenol from the group of phytoalexins – substances secreted by plants to defend against pathogens. It is found in both stereoisomeric forms (cis and trans), but the most active form is trans-resveratrol extracted from Polygonum cuspidatum. Pterostilbenes belong to a class of compounds called phytoalexins, antimicrobial substances naturally synthesized by plants when attacked by pathogens such as bacteria or fungi.
